When the fighting broke out in Sudan, Suha’s life changed forever. A dedicated doctor, public health specialist, and loving mother of two, Suha had spent her life helping others. But when war came to her home in Khartoum, she found herself needing to escape to save her own family.
Khartoum was one of the first cities devastated by the conflict. Violence engulfed the streets, and Suha and her family faced impossible choices. As the situation grew worse by the day, they were forced to flee, becoming displaced within their own country.
But even that wasn’t enough to keep them safe.
Eight months pregnant and desperate to protect her children, Suha made the painful decision to leave Sudan entirely. She fled to Egypt, braving a journey filled with unimaginable hardship.
“It was a traumatizing experience,” Suha reflected. The destruction and despair she witnessed are awful images she will never forget.
Once in Egypt, Suha faced a new challenge: starting over in a foreign land. But Suha is not the kind of person who gives up. Despite everything she had endured, her instinct to care for others remained strong. She found work with St. Andrew’s Refugee Services (StARS), a partner of Church World Service, where she became the organization’s first Complaints and Accountability Coordinator.
Through her role, Suha trains staff to listen, respond, and provide transparent support for those in need. “StARS provided me with a platofrm to use my experience, knowledge and expertise to be of service to other refugee who have been through the same struggles I have,” Suha said. “This adds a lot to my mental and psycholgical well-being.”
With renewed hope, Suha wants to share her story to inspire others. She said, “To everyone struggling in life, refugee or not, I want them to know that everything will work out somehow. Never give up hope. Find your purpose and add meaning to your life and the lives of others around you, wherever life puts you.”
Suha’s courage is a reminder of what is possible when we stand together. Church World Service is proud to partner with StARS to support refugees like Suha, providing resources and opportunities that help them rebuild their lives.
Through the CWS supported program, StARS, refugees receive food boxes to provide critical nutrition for their children and improve their families’ overall health.
Food boxes contain non-perishable food supplies and essential hygiene items, including soap, toothpaste and sanitary pads.
