When Sunday fled South Sudan, she didn’t know what the future would hold.
Her journey was full of challenges, from the hardships she faced at home to the struggles of starting over in Egypt. Life seemed overwhelming, especially as a young mother-to-be.
But everything changed when Sunday found St. Andrew’s Refugee Services (StARS), a CWS partner in Cairo. It was there that she discovered a place of hope, healing, and opportunity—not just for herself, but for her child.
As she prepared to welcome her baby, Sunday joined the Young Mothers Psychosocial Program. There, she found support to help her navigate the challenges of early motherhood. Despite her young age, Sunday was determined to create a better life.
When her baby was just five months old, she felt ready to take the next step toward independence. Sunday applied to work as a Youth Assistant in the same program that had supported her. Her exceptional skills, commitment and ability to manage herself stood out, and she was offered the position.
In this role, Sunday cares for babies in the nursery, helps facilitate support groups for young mothers, and works alongside caseworkers to ensure families get the care they need.
But Sunday didn’t stop there. Her passion for making a difference grew stronger.
She joined the Youth Advisory Board, where her leadership, positive spirit and creativity are inspiring others to dream big and work hard. “StARS is the role model that filled an empty space in me,” Sunday shared.
Today, she is a role model herself—helping young mothers find their footing and showing her peers that they can overcome any obstacle. Sunday’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when refugees receive the support they need to rebuild their lives.

Through the CWS supported program, StARS, refugees receive food boxes to provide critical nutrition for their children and improve their families’ overall health.
Food boxes contain non-perishable food supplies and essential hygiene items, including soap, toothpaste and sanitary pads.
