Mrs. Amna’s Story

Mrs. Amna, a 32 years old Sudanese asylum seeker, is a married woman and a mother of three girls aged 7, 4, and 9 months old. Mrs. Amna’s husband was arrested by the Sudanese military after the outbreak of the war in Sudan, and Mrs. Amna was forced to flee the country while six months pregnant, leaving her husband behind, unsure if he was still alive.

StARS provided Mrs. Amna with food boxes to supplement her children’s food intake and improve the family’s overall health. These boxes provide non-perishable food supplies and essential hygiene items, including soap, toothpaste and sanitary pads to more than 270 individuals like Mrs. Amna.

Resilience & Renewal

Each food and hygiene box is intended to provide basic supplies for one month and costs a total of $15. StARS will provide 50-150 boxes per month, depending on need.

Mrs. Amna arrived in Egypt on 31 August 2023, initially living off her savings and selling jewelry, but later struggled financially and sought help from StARS in October.

Assigned a caseworker, Mrs. Amna received emotional support and guidance, allowing her to safely give birth in December 2023 despite losing her marriage certificate in Sudan.

To aid her recovery, she received multipurpose cash assistance and her family was assessed for malnutrition, receiving food boxes and nutritional guidance to improve their health.

The food support provided essential items and introduced Mrs. Amna to new foods, like oats, which she learned to use, enhancing her children’s nutrition and overall well-being.

By August 2024, Mrs. Amna had stabilized her situation, found a job, and no longer required regular support from StARS, although thousands more awaited urgent assistance.
